Joan Hober (Gretter)

Joan Gretter passed away in her sleep on February 4th, 2022. She is survived and celebrated by her family – sons Craig (Gwynne), Brock, and Gavin (Elizabeth), and six grandchildren, Katie and Gage, Henry and June, and Harper and Margaret. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 46 years, Dr. Thomas Gretter. She was born Margaret Joan Hober in Detroit, Michigan to Edward and Felicia (Olstyn). Her brother Robert pre-deceased her. Joan and her family moved from Michigan to Ohio when she was very young. After graduating from Shaker Heights High School, Joan attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Joan was a social worker at both University Hospitals and the Cleveland Clinic, where she and Tom met. She was pursuing a Master's Degree in Social Work from Case Western Reserve University, but paused those studies to raise her three boys. After moving to Pepper Pike in 1975, Joan was elected to, and served on, the Pepper Pike City Council for many years, eventually serving as Vice Mayor. She was active in numerous local organizations, including the Cleveland Botanical Garden and Benjamin Rose Society, among many. Joan was very strong and extremely curious, but also quite kind. She had an affinity for breakfast pastries, chocolates, and "interesting" wines "with personality." She had a wonderful sense of humor, complimented by her distinctive laugh. In her spare time, Joan enjoyed gardening, cooking, golfing with her family, doing puzzles, and reading. Joan loved to travel with Tom and explore new cities and cultures in their spare time. In lieu of flowers, please send donations / remembrances to the Cleveland Botanical Garden, 11030 East Blvd, Cleveland, OH 44106. A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
